Sunday style: Fashion for Church

It's Sunday and I know a lot of you might be going through your wardrobe searching for what to wear. Picking a perfect outfit for church on a Sunday morning could be much of a herculean task to some people,  well except you're in the choir and have to wear a choir uniform. But if you're neither a chorister nor an usher, then this post will probably give you an insight about your choices of Sunday service wears.

Unlike social events and other occasions, church is a place that demands total and absolute modesty. Imagine a scenario where I attended a church on a Sunday, I was trying to concentrate in worship when a lady walked pass my side and I almost lost concentration. Apparently,  she was not appropriately dressed for the service,  with her micro mini skin tight skirt,  yet with an almost ten (10) inches high heel shoe. I nearly mistook where I was for a club... Lol

The few tips that we'd be considering here are for both the ladies and guys alike because,  not all things worn by guys are appropriate for the house of the Lord. I hope they help!

Tips for ladies
1. Avoid micro mini skirt -  your skirt is better right on the knee or a little below the knee.

2. Avoid skin tight dresses or skirts -  it's better you wear something a little free, so you don't have to reveal how curvy you are (save that for your dinner dates... Lol)

3. Avoid tops or blouses that reveals your cleavage -  show some respect as you go before the presence of the Almighty God. Revealing those cleavages would cost you more harm than good when men in church lose focus on the worship of God because of what they're seeing... Be careful!

4. Avoid armless dresses or tops -  seeing your armpit when you lift up holy hands might not be such a pleasant sight. It could be really repulsive even if it is neatly shaved. It's better to wear something with sleeve whether long or short.

5. Avoid see through blouses -  people should see through God and not you! Do not drag attention meant for divinity to yourself (it's dangerous)

Aside the five (5) tips outlined, other commandments to be adhered to are; avoid shorts, leggings, crop tops, spaghetti straps, loud makeovers and loud hair do.

And to my male folks, not much is outlined but there are a few that should be considered...
1. Do not wear rumpled clothes. Make sure to iron your clothes neatly just the way you would your office clothes.

2. For guys who love jewelry and all the bling-blings, I'd advice you tone it down when going to church. Adorning yourself with all those shiny gold accessories around your neck might be drifting worshippers' attention from God to you.... I'm sure you don't wanna fall out with God... Remember He's a jealous God.

3. Try to match your colours appropriately and make sure you polish your shoes well. Most guys would prefer to look all dapper and cute at work than church.... You think God ain't stylish?

No matter what you wear, all that matter is comfortability and in being comfortable, never forget modesty!

Fashion tips for men: Pocket Square

You can call it handkerchief, some may call it a handkie/handky, others might want to call it pockerchief. I chose to call it "pocket square" which I think is more appropriate and sounds more modern.....Lol. Regardless of it's numerous names, it is an important fashion accessory in a gentleman's wardrobe that is often overlooked and sometimes misused by many.

The pocket square isn't a twenty first (21st) century style ingredient. It has been used throughout history, dating as far back as the Shakespearean Era as well as the 14th century among the French noblemen who wore heavily embroidered silk pocket squares scented with perfumes to mask the stench of the working class as they traveled through town.

There are not so many rules regarding wearing pocket squares,  but only one commandment is given and it is an enormously important one...

Do not match your pocket square exactly with your tie... Avoid matchy-matchy!!!

Pocket squares are elegant finishing touches for any stylish gentleman. It should compliment your tie or your shirt. You could perhaps pick out a colour from your tie - for example, if you're to wear a read tie with blue dots or stripes, you can decide to pick either of the colours for a pocket square or you can decide to use another pattern of both colours different from that of your tie. You might even choose to compliment your shirt instead.





Incase you decide not to wear a tie, you can compliment your shirt or even choose for a contrast, you can pick a colour from your jacket (that's if your jacket has more than one colour) or better still, you can choose to match your socks.

These days wearing pocket squares have become trendy as it makes one appear cool and classy, hence the need to wear it right. Have a little fun and play around it. As a sartorial detail for the modern man, wear it with confidence and you will wear it rather than it wearing you.

Windscreen cleaner turns "Style Doctor"

When you hear "dress the way you want to be addressed" what readily comes to mind?
Expensive does not mean classy. Comfort should be the main criteria (don't wear rag tho...lol). Wearing something that makes you confident is key no matter your job or status. If you value yourself and your image, take good care of that image. Your image like it or not, creates a certain opinion about you. That opinion stands between you landing a better opportunity or not in life. The case of Abdullahi Olayotan isn't far from this fact.

Despite being a windscreen cleaner in Abeokuta, Abdullahi unlike other folks who do his kind of job, chose to be different in his dress code for work. Normally you see young boys in traffic on Lagos roads cleaning windscreen of cars stuck in traffic for a little change they'd collect. Most of them would look so dirty with tattered clothes on,  looking like beggars but such wasn't the case of Abdullahi. Rather he chose to always dress smart with suit, clean shirt and a bow tie (you'd think he's the CEO of one big company), not minding his kind of work or what anyone thinks.

Few days ago when his picture while on duty as usual went viral, Uche Nnaji also known as The Style Doctor,  who is the Creative Director and founder of OUCH Fashion and Lifestyle Brand,  initiated a search for Abdullahi, requesting anyone who knows his whereabouts to link him up as a job was waiting for him at OUCH.

On an Instagram post, the Style doctor outlined seven (7) reasons why Abdullahi deserves a job at OUCH, one of the reasons according to him is the fact that Abdullahi made an effort to dress better than his present situation which indicates that he is a man with vision and therefore needs a push.

When photographer, Daniel Sync took a snapshot of Abdullahi while on duty, little did he know he was starting a life changing process for him. As the Internet played host to Abdullahi's photo, it did not take long before he was welcomed at OUCH's Lekki outlet by the Boss himself.

Welcoming the University of Ilorin dropout turned windscreen cleaner, Uche Nnaji noted that Abdullahi loves fashion and is very willing to learn. He further offered to train him for free as a style doctor. A training that will avail him the opportunity of learning what it takes to be stylish as well as become a professional fashion stylist. "I simply want to teach him how to fish by eventually acquiring sartorial skills and knowledge just like me" Uche said.

Since the event of this great opportunity, the story of Abdullahi have been featured in lots of local and international news platforms including Yahoo! News which described it as "social media's latest success story" and also CNN.

We wish Abdullahi Olayotan well as he begins his journey into the Nigerian fashion industry and also appreciate Uche Nnaji for taking interest in bettering his life. More gestures like this go along way....
